Bynea WE Tour October 08 (10/08)
As 21 members set off from the club on the 2nd annual tour up to “Llandod” (Llandrindod wells), it was decided that the slow group would take the fast route to the café stop at Llandovery while the faster riders would take the longer route. There was only one slight problem with this situation; four riders took the longer route while the rest took the faster route. Who would get to the café stop first? As the main body of the club took a much leisurely ride to the café on the faster route, Dave B, Mark H, Craig and Simon decided to work together and try to get to the café earlier than everyone else via the longer route. The four guys were keeping the speed going well until they made a pit stop just outside Ammanford, at a local convenience. The guys sorting themselves out, Simon decided that his coinage in his pockets would have a mind of its own, and run away from him. Yes! His pocket emptied itself and went all over the floor. He could pick his own money up; you don’t know what has been on those floors, everyone else waited outside.
Once Simon had sorted himself out it was onto Ffairfach, but before we could get there Craig had picked up a puncture on the way and another unplanned stop to sort himself out. At this point Arwel met up with the guys having missed everyone at the club, and one more for the party. As the guys eventually made some good time over Bethlehem and down to Llangadog the speed got ramped up until there was a final sprint between Dave B, Craig and Arwel for the café sign at Llandovery. Craig just took the sprint from Arwel as they caught Dave B. knapping. The aptly named eyeball out-group did get to the café stop earlier, about 20 minutes earlier, enough time to have a large breakfast and cups of tea, while every one else was still arriving. After the usual banter at the café and the refilling of the full English breakfast, 7 brave souls would brave the Sugar loaf mountain pass together, or so it would seem. On the approach to the Sugar loaf, it seemed that Chris Bates and Arwel had hatched a plan to drop everyone on the climb, without out ever mentioning a word to each other. The only guy that could just hang on to them was Craig and he just got dropped at the very top. But as this guy reaches the top he manages to catch Chris Bates up again, whom Arwel has also dropped. As they both manage chase Arwel down, it seems that this is a race to the B&B in Llandrindod. As the three guys are out in front everyone else is trailing behind wondering what has just happened, and with a tail wind behind them there is no way they are getting caught. But as Arwel puts on the pressure over the miles Chris gets dropped then Craig, and the winner of the unofficial race would be Arwel, first to the B&B, followed by Craig then Chris. As everyone reaches the B&B in dribs and drabs it seems that everyone has had eventful ride to Llandod.
Sunday morning was miserable with the rain still prevalent from the night before, and everyone cradling their sore head from the night before, “beer, it’s great!” but as the morning progressed the rain fizzled out and the wind abated. The slower members decided to go before the “eye balls out” group left to get a head start and took the support van keys with them. Send out the Cavalry to get the keys, a few miles later the keys were back, then it was time to leave. With weary heads and weary legs it was café time again, were the eyeballs out team going to get their teas first at Llandovery café or would they have to wait inline with everyone else at the café stop. No bloody chance as the guys flew past just after Builth Wells; it was eyeballs out until the café stop. Just think they just needed a rest from all the cycling, nutters! Café stop again and the banter starts again, “full English” yes that’s me say four people and three aren’t very happy. Tea’s up and there is fifteen people shouting over, yes over here. After much confusion every one leaves the café full of food and full of tea, and everyone heads back to the Bynea clubhouse. As everyone turns up at the clubhouse again in dribs and drabs, it turned out to be a truly enjoyable weekend with people asking when the next touring weekend will be. Well done to all that made that weekend possible.
Bynea Cycling Club Update 2008 (04/08)
As the cycling season is well underway it's time to check in with our Bynea riders and see how there coming along. On the Road Racing scene 3 riders are standing out from the crowd gaining 19 points (Rhys Gravelle, Hefin Price & Arwel Davies), and putting the club into 5th position, with Cwmcarn Paragon in first place overall. Rhys Gravelle is riding his first year as a junior, is gaining valuable experience by also riding the Martyn Ashfield Classic Road Race.(Race report Link) This national stage race is a tough race for Juniors racing with riders with a lot more experience, which proved to be a tough race for Rhys. Other races where our riders have been gaining points are Gateway Cycles Spring Handicap Road Race,
The Betty Pharoah Memorial Legstretchers RR,
Angela Davies Memorial Road Race.
The Time Trailists are also starting out the season in good form. The 2's up TTT (Team Time Trial) on the 2nd March showed good performances on the Neath course from father and son team, John and Rhys Gravelle who came in third with a time of 57:27 Also showing a good performance was Gerard Oram (aka Turbo man) and Robert Saunders (North Bucks CC) who had the fastest composite team with a time of 57:58 The fastest team with a Junior was Hywel Stredwick and Hefin Price who finished in a time of 1:00:49
The results of other races shows consistent results from each capable rider which they can only improve on as the racing season progresses. The results from the Magic Dragon 1 were Dave Seaward 1:02:13, Edward Evans 1:14:58, Andrew Williams 1:18:37, John Evans 1:26:10, Diane Walford 1:27:02. Results from the SW VTTA were Arwel Davies 22:40, Dave Brice 23:59, Dave Seaward 24:26, Phil Jones 25:47, Tom Samuel 30:13
The Bynea 30m TT on the 6th of April put some riders off racing that day as it was snowing heavily just hours before the start. But luckily apart from being cold, the roads dried out to everyone's relief. Bynea riders were out in force that day which showed in the results having 3 riders (3rd Gerard Oram, 6th Craig Jones, 9th Mark Hiddlestone) in the top ten. Results; Gerard Oram 1:12:58, Craig Jones 1:16:01, Mark Hiddlestone 1:17:08, Dave Seaward 1:18:33, Dave Brice 1:20:02, Edward Evans 1:35:34, Diane Walford 1:37:29, John Evans 1:40:07, Tom Samuel 1:40:37
Now with the boys and girls getting some good solid performances in this unseasonal weather, things can only get better as the warm weather is just around the corner (hopefully).
Bynea Cycling Club January Newsletter 2008 (01/08)
Firstly, allow me to wish all of our membership a Happy New Year!
As your secretary, I am to writing to you not only to wish that you achieve what you hope for in the season ahead, but also to provide you with some up-to-date information for your urgent attention.
Some of you may be aware that I have been approached by a French cycling club about a “Twinning” opportunity in Agen. The club is offering Bynea CC members a visit to like-minded families in the Agen area, whilst enjoying some pleasurable cycling. The Club in question has suggested a week in September for this venture, although the last week of August may be an outside option. I need you to think about this fantastic opportunity, whilst contemplating the chance of cycling near the Pyrenees and sampling the fine French wines! I therefore urge that you either contact me by email or other by March 1st registering your interest and the prospective numbers of your party. I understand from the correspondence that the French club’s families would provide accommodation, with the only expense for Bynea Members being flights and spending money.
Our club captain, Sarah Rees will be organizing a training weekend very soon and would like to remind you all about this. There seem to be a couple of options up for grabs. These include; Llandrindod, Pendine Sands or Cardigan. The ride to Llandrindod is some 60 miles, whereas Cardigan would be shorter. Prices of these three venues seem pretty comparable, as does the accommodation. Any interest should be expressed to Sarah ASAP please as this trip is scheduled for February, prior to the commencement of the cycling season.
Finally, an important message to all Bynea CC members who intend to take part in club time trials this year. Cycling Time Trials (formerly RTTC), are increasing the levy for club time trials from 50p to £1.00 per rider per event. To avoid the complications of collecting money at each event the club has decided to offset this increase by charging all prospective senior TT riders an extra £5 at the beginning of the season. Juvenile riders will not have to pay. Riders will also be required to enter their name, date of birth, address and an emergency contact telephone number on the new style start sheet. No money will be accepted at an event and non member cyclists who turn up for a ride will not be allowed to ride but will be invited to join the club and return when they are members. These changes have been brought about by the governing body of the sport and are purely in the interest of the safety of riders, so I hope you will support your club over these new rules and continue to respect the integrity of both Phil Jones and John Bevan who run our club time trials despite personal adversity.
Best wishes always, Diane Walford, Secretary, Bynea CC.
Bynea WE Tour 13th 14th October (10/07)
Tudor Thomas organized a superb cycling week end up to Llandrindod Wells for the Bynea club. The two days of cycling took in 140miles of hills up to Llandrindod Wells and back. The weather was being very miserable on the Saturday morning, as everyone met up at the club house. I was thinking, CYCLING IN THE RAIN, MY FAVORITE, NOT!!! As the Bynea boys and girls put there gear into the van it was rain and drizzle city and no wind to blow the rubbish weather away, oh great!. Departure time was upon us and we cycled through to Pontardulais and the drizzle seemed to stop, much to the relief of everyone. The first climb of the day through Garnswillt sorted out how the rest of the ride would be split from the main group. We planned to stop at Llandovery for some food and a cup of char (tea) so I thought there must be a Bynea train splitting off the main group and heading for the cafe stop at Llandovery. But as everyone struggled over the hills, we stopped and regrouped in Ammanford. The hills over Bethlehem grouped together the speed freaks (namely Hefin, Mark, Paul, Craig and Simon) obviously dying for a cup of tea, and team trialing themselves to the cafe stop minutes before everyone else got there "this was going to be a fun ride". A full cooked breakfast which took forever at the cafe went down a treat and a cup of tea to refresh the parts other drinks cannot reach, left most people thinking maybe we should go home now. But another 35 miles to the B&B over the flat would be OK, but there were shocking hills to follow. The hard climbs to follow split the speed freaks up from the main group, as they raced up every hill trying to beat Hefin to the top. Just before Builth Wells everyone regrouped and descended into Builth and Tim Jones sprinted off the front of the group to take the sprint for the town sign and caught everyone napping until it was too late! The climb out of Builth towards Llandrindod was a killer after the frantic climbs from Llandovery, and it was Hefin at the front leading the pace with Craig behind clinging onto his wheel everyone else was climbing at there own pace. Much to everyone's relief there was only about 7 miles from Builth to the B&B. The next day was a bit quite as everyone knew 65 miles to go until they were back to the club. But unknown to them there were some killer climbs to come and that was before we got to the Sugar Loaf. But sure enough the speed freaks were to be out in front with everyone else trailing in the rear. The top of the SugarLoaf was a bit of suprise for everyone and as always the pace is competitive, okay then it was mental, 50mph on that decent and club members overtaking one another. It was time to take in who was overtaking you as well as what was in front of you. Yes it was fun, it was more than fun it was great! I loved it, the best buzz you can get with the adrenaline flowing through your veins. Then the cafe stop at Llandovery, who was going to get there cup of tea first? As everyone regrouped in the cafe, Arwel joined us and mentioned the bunch of nutters screaming down the sugar loaf at breakneck speed, while he was climbing up to meet us. The route back through Llandelio up to Carmel split the group again with the tough climb ahead and young Hywel showing his strength and trying to keep up with the lead group climbing at a relentless pace. Again the club members regroup at Cross Hands and then it's non stop until we get back to the club. What a fantastic weekend, well done to Tudor who brought up the broom wagon for Tim's (Audax rider) puncture on the way back. A great weekend for everyone at the Bynea club.
Roadie does good (09/07)
Paul Thomas whose first full season as a category 4 rider, has gained enough points to be ranked a category 2 rider.
Paul has worked hard all season for his well earned category 2 ranking. He has been racing most weekends

When the going gets tough - Race Report (07/07)
The Pembroke Standard Triathlon (from hell), by Diane Walford Bynea Club Secretary
She became so focused when Gareth from Multisport had rung to inform her that Pembroke was an “Age Group” qualifier for the World Championships for September 2007. There was no discernible difference from the Pembroke triathlons of old, just a different course? The wet weather continued with the forecast as terrible as ever. No problem, it would all be fine. She had declared her intention to qualify. It was sorted. “Cross the line and you’re in” Malcolm said from the BTA. “You are the only woman in your age group” he said. She felt better all the time! Race day! Fishguard in the pouring rain. Hardly any sleep in the Hotel where “No Smoking in Public Places” had not yet been reached. It is a long way after all! Christine Lloyd and she were shattered before they began. They arose at 5 am and went through the process of electrolyte drinks and gels, checking kit and deciding which umbrella would go with the outfit! It was p*****g down! Great! Down to the start. Well rehearsed, she gets ready. Bike, cycling gear, running gear, drinks. Now get that wet suit on and stay focused. 100 athletes have not turned up! Why aren’t they doing it? Seems like millions in the swim, but where do they go? She’s not bothered, she will get them on the bike and the run, or so she thinks! One lap down, one to go. Out of the slipway and run along the sea-wall and back in again. Now where is that last buoy? Porthcawl was very close by the time she realized the buoy was on the right, not left! Cry? No. Scream? Who would hear? Just keep going, there is nothing else! Into transition, and only one bike left, so it seems. Never mind off she goes. Two laps of 29 miles in total. She doesn’t recollect the climb out of Fishguard! It was never so hard! The winds are howling now. Oh she is so glad that she zipped on her matching red and black jacket. Someone may notice if smartness is not adhered to! Another lap, oh bother! Into transition again and off on the run. Why is she up to her knees in puddles? Did someone mention “Cross Country” here? They’re having a laugh now! Up that hill and along the cliff top! ‘Scuse me, twice! It looks like a nice view of the sea and all of those residential bungalows up there! Don’t tell her to “Just keep going!” Running up steps to the cliff tops, good idea for a triathlon Gareth Mate! Down the hill, one last time, along the grass and to the finish. Gasping to the end with an amazing time of just under 4 hours! Malcolm is there on the finish line! She can’t believe it! What kind of role must require a Team Captain to wait that long for an athlete to finish? “You’re in” he declares, if you want it. “Want it?” she thinks, deserved it more like for eating the humble pie of defeat! Our Club Secretary learned an awful lot that day. To remember to respect triathlon, and how to dig deep, deeper than she ever thought was possible. Hamburg, here she comes!
Pembrey Crits - Race Report (06/07)
June and the first of the Pembrey Crits (circuit racing). The Bynea club was out in force that day fielding nine riders and a good chance of getting some top ten finishes. The weather was not exactly nice that evening and the rain had only eased off an hour before the race, conditions damp and windy. The race got off to a good start with the bunch staying tightly packed due to the wind. There was quite a few breakaway attempts by riders, but the bunch eventually pulled them all back during the race. A good attempt was made by Chris Bates on a break away, and the Bynea riders trying to control the rest of the bunch. But in the end it all came down to a bunch sprint at the end. Thanks to loads of encouragement (screaming) from Sarah,Juliet and Kay on the side lines, Paul Thomas and Hefin Price manage to get 2nd and 7th placing's respectively. Ian Bendall managed to get 5th place in the 2nd category race, which followed that evening.
Tour of Carmarthenshire- Race Report (06/07)
It was a really hot Sunday as 50 riders arrived for the start of the Tour of Carmarthenshire road race.
There were ten Bynea riders taking part in this race and a good chance that there would be top ten placings.
The course started in Carmel, which decended into the Town of Llandeilo and a short climb into the town.
The course then looped around Dryslwyn castle and back to Llandeilo, which was then repeated four times
before heading up the climb to finish the 60 miles at Carmel.
As the race got going, and only 6 miles into the race Dave Seaward suffered a mechanical problem and was dissapointed
by his misfourtune so early on into the race. After the climb in Llandeilo a hand ful of riders got caught out by the
acceleration of pace and spent the next few laps trying to catch the bunch. The final lap a break away of 6 riders, of
which contained Paul Thomas, had given the peleton the slip to start the climb up into Carmel. But due to tired legs on the climb,
it wasn't long until the break away fragmented and the main bunch caught up, for the hard slog to the finish.
Well done to Ian Bendall (6th place) and Arwel Davies (12th place) and all the Bynea riders who participated in this event.
A very special thanks to all the people that made this Road race a success. For full results see (Welsh Cycling Union)

Presidents 24th May- Race Report (05/07)
The conditions were favorable on the Thursday night for road racing, with 80 riders signing on the line and a good turnout from Bynea, fielding 7 riders in this race. The Handicap event of 3 laps around Resolven is always a tough event as each handicap group is being chased by faster riders. The first group of 4th cat and women riders set off 4 min's ahead of the 3rd cat riders, which in turn set off 4 min's ahead of 2nd cat and elite riders. There was a break away in the 2nd group of 5 riders, but this was short lived as the faster 2nd cat and elite riders caught up to the 3rd cat riders on the 2nd lap. There was a great increase in pace from the main group now and most riders were struggling to keep up. As this group of riders joined the dual carriage way, the riders were strung out like a long piece of string traveling at 33mph, and one or two riders found this too fast and dropped off from the rest of the group. It wasn't long before the main group of riders were a minute behind the front group of riders. The short climb before the finish was when the main group caught up to the front group of riders, and then chaos ensued as the riders blended together slowing everyone down. A group of 20 riders managed to slip away from everyone else, and headed for the finish intent on being first. Unfortunately none of the Bynea riders got podium positions this time, and so will have to wait until July for the next Presidents race. Well done to all Bynea riders who entered this event! (Ian Bendal, Paul Thomas, Dave Seaward, Hefin Price, Arwel Davies, Mark Hiddlestone, Craig Jones)
L'etape de la Defonce 19th&20th May- Race Report (05/07)
It was always going to be hard due to the standard of riders there, but Paul Thomas, Hefin Price, Mark Hiddlestone and Craig Jones of the Bynea CC traveled to Cowbridge for the L'Etape de la Defonce 2 Day stage race. This involved a 66 mile road race followed an 8 mile team time trial on the Saturday and a 46 mile road race on the Sunday.
Stage 1
The 80 strong field of riders endured the high winds on Saturday which
made the road race course difficult. Road debris, the cause of a crash early on, resulted 3 riders to hit the
deck one of the riders was Craig, who was unhurt but found it impossible to get back into the bunch after his tumble.
In the final stages of stage one the field became fragmented with some riders running on empty, but most of the riders finishing in around 3hrs.
Time trial
Our boys feeling out of place at the start with standard race bikes, as other teams had full on TT bikes, aero helmets
and skin suits. Like other teams Bynea were still tired after the road race, it seemed like mission impossible to do a
Time trial but after last minute re-arrangements they headed off.The hilly course was very testing on the legs, but the time trial
went without fault and to plan. Hefin, Mark and Paul crossed the line first and Craig crossing the line 20 sec's later.
A person sporting full Liquigas team colours and Liquigas team bike was also spotted that day being amused by the tired riders crossing the line, could that be Magnus Backstedt?
Stage 2
The wind had died down by Sunday and conditions were good for road racing. The peleton were on a mission from the word go
and average speeds got up to 30mph at times with a couple of riders trying to make a brake away.
There was a few tense moments for Bynea as Hefin and Craig watched one rider who
had difficulty with his gears, and ended up doing a front wheelie, which was quite spectacular. Luckily for the rider,
he got himself and the bike under control. The first major climb started to create problems for the peleton and it split
into three groups, Paul and Hefin in the first group and Mark and Craig in the second. With 25 miles left to go and more climbs to get over the groups stayed apart until they finished. After enjoying a taste of stage racing, Bynea CC hope to come back next year and give the L'Etape de la Defonce another go.

Dynamic Diane - Race Report (05/07)
The gales of yesterday were blown away on 20th May when Diane Walford (Bynea CC Secretary) arrived at Nolwyn's Waterside Llanelli triathlon this weekend. She had lost sleep worrying about the swim/bike triathlon which had been a problem the previous year as it had meant mounting the bike immediately prior to a bridge/hill! She looked at the watch finally, at 2 am before falling to sleep!
5.30 wide awake! No more sleep. "Let's get going, bike in the car and porridge, she thought!" Down to the venue, guess what? the transition had been moved! Such instant relief but what about the lack of sleep? Plenty of time to do that when you die, she thought! Everything in place: Bike just so in the right gear, cycling shoes, belt with number attached, glasses (lenses already inserted) helmet at the ready and running shoes. Beautiful weather! No need to worry about coming out of the swim and freezing!
So to the briefing, Nolwyn says his bit and the nerves kick in! Time for a gel and wash it down. Zip up that we suit and get to the slimy oh so slimy slip way! Get that head into the water that's what Rose says! Oh the water is so, so cold but forget that and get into position, one minute to go. An "M" shaped swim 750 metres and good luck to us all! She is swimming well and strongly and staying out of trouble, which is the main thing! There are breast strokers and nutters and all sorts but she negotiates them all with ease.
Out of the water, assisted by our Simon Painter! Get that zip down and pull the suit down and get that hat off, running to the bike! Now be quick, glasses, socks (yes)! and cycle shoes and those fab red and black mits from County Cycles (matching the Celtic tri outfit)! Helmet must be secure prior to taking your bike, so much to remember, chip is in place, no chip, no time!
Into the pedals and out of the venue, turn left and on "Home Ground" take a drink, and dropped the bottle! Never mind, drank loads anyway. Going well now up to the Kidwelly roundabout and back. Powering away on the new "Dream Machine" passing loads of men, that's the girl go for it and feeling good!
Back to transition and was that really a surreal experience or what? Rack the bike before the helmet comes off, don't forget and off with the shoes and on with the running shoes and hat and off she goes! Down the millennium path to the Welsh sign and back and two of them. It is very hot now and it is getting tough, but this sport is for the hardy so it is great! Here's the finish and they say "Well done" and it is so sweet!
Diane won the "Super Vet" prize desptie being 5/6 years older than other women in her category in a time of 1 hour 45 minutes. She was also the first Carmarthen woman to finish. Her peer group ask her what is next? 'To qualify for Vancouver in 2008" she says. " You are getting faster with age" they say and the Vintage Vets at 59 is next! "What comes after the Vintage Vets?" they ask her. "The crematorium" she replies, but we know that she is really joking because she is our secretary and we know she is invincible!

Merthyr CC Criterium Parc Bryn Bach 12th May- Race Report (05/07)
A wet and very blustery day at Bryn Bach park, with 26 riders being challenged by this technical 3km circuit.
The hills and the bad conditions split the riders up into small groups. Paul Thomas being in the first group
followed by Craig Jones in the group behind. The lead group of riders initially contained eight riders but
the tough conditions whittled numbers down to three at the finish with Darran Carpenter sprinting up the hill
to take both the two primes and the overall win. He was closely followed by Daren Williams (Gateway RC) who
finished second. Paul Thomas (Bynea CC) rounded off the top three and Craig Jones (Bynea CC) coming
in at tenth place.(Welsh Cycling Union)
Roadie reigns in the points (05/07)
Paul Thomas who's first year of racing has got off to a storming start. Racing at Llandow motor racing circuit and Abergavenny road races, has already gained 14 points for this rider. He now moves up to a 3rd category licence and tougher races. Paul and the Bynea roadies next assignment is to race the L'Etape de la Defonce in May. This is a two day stage race around Cowbridge and involves two 50mile road races and a short Team Time Trial of about 10miles against the clock. The Tour of Carmarthenshire is also an event coming up in June for the Bynea club, who hope to take the advantage of local area and win some podium places.
It's Open Season 2007 for Bynea
The Bynea Cycling Club kicked off its 2007 season with confidence high. During 2006, the club had enjoyed one of its best seasons for years with Rhys Gravelle setting new club records for a juvenile rider, Hefin Price winning the junior category of the Welsh time trial series and Sarah Rees successfully defending the women's category title that she had originally taken in 2005. Add to that a top ten overall finish for Mark Hiddlestone and a top three spot for Gerry Oram and it was clear that 2006 would take some beating.
That was the background to this weekend's first round of the 2007 Welsh Time Trial series, which runs through the year and culminates in the eigth and finalround in the Towy Valley in August. Round 1, though, was a gruelling affair fought out over a hilly 10 mile course near Raglan in desperately hard conditions as the riders faced a constant barrage of wind, rain and sleet.
Rhys Gravelle confirmed his rising status when he secured the juvenile category in 24m 37s - a time also good enough for 28th poistion overall. Another promising Bynea youngster, Hywel Stredwick, was second juvenile in 27m 24s. In the main category, Gerry Oram was fastest Bynea rider with a time of 22m 36s to finish in 6th place overall, but was also awarded the
trophy for fastest veteran. He was backed up by Simon Painter in 15th place (23m 44s) and Mark Hiddlestone in 17th Place (23m 51s) to take the team category outright. Hefin Price finished second in the junior category and27th overall (24m 33s) and Sarah Rees was 5th fastest woman (30m 18s).
Other Bynea riders were: David Seward (33rd in 25m 8s), Phil Jones (48th in 26m 48s), John Ellis (49th in 26m 51s), Andy Edwards(29m4s), Luc Funnell (4th junior and 74th overall in 30m 12s), Tom Samuel (78th in 31m 49s), Edward Evans (5th junior and 79th overall in 31m 57s).
Many of these riders had been in action the previous weekend in a 55 mile handicap road race held near Abergavenny. All the Bynea riders - including Simon Painter and Paul Thomas who were competing in their first mass start road race finished in the main bunch with the exception of Ian Bendall who had managed to get into a break of riders who contested the top placings. Although missing out on victory in the end, this was an encouraging return to racing for Bendall who had taken 2006 off. (Gerry)
TOP AWARD FOR TUDOR – THE UNSUNG HERO OF WELSH SPORT ( Report by Betty Owen)
Each year the Welsh Sports Association holds a Welsh Sports Hall of Fame dinner in City Hall, Cardiff where The Unsung Hero Award is presented to their chosen individual. The award seeks to acknowledge the tireless efforts of one volunteer within Welsh sport and is awarded to someone who demonstrates a selfless passion and determination for their sport.
About a month ago we were contacted by Chris Langdon, the Chairman of the Welsh Cycling Union informing us that our own Tudor Thomas had been nominated by the W.C.U. and subsequently chosen as this year’s recipient. We were of course delighted at this well deserved recognition of Tudor’s commitment and enthusiasm for our sport over so many years.
Tina and John and Alan and I were honoured to be invited as Chris’s guests to the dinner and were sworn to secrecy, as the winner’s identity is traditionally only revealed at the ceremony. Now on a lighter note, this was no mean feat for a number of reasons. One being that this occasion is a very prestigious affair with a black tie code of dress expected. Now, you may have noticed that despite Tudor’s many outstanding qualities, sartorial elegance does not figure high on his list of priorities- so you can imagine our concern that he appeared suitably dressed for the occasion! For three weeks we coaxed, cajoled and ultimately threatened him into buying a new suit . He finally capitulated with only four days to go. To his credit and our relief I must report that finally he also did us and himself proud in this respect .
The wonderful architecture of the City Hall lent a great deal to the sense of occasion of the ceremony. On arrival we all spent the first hour surreptitiously glancing around, trying to identify the sports personalities present. Following the excellent dinner the awards began. Tudor’s face was a picture as his name was announced and the list of his contributions to cycling were read out. It was great honour for him personally and a showcase for cycling and its importance as a major sport in Wales.
Most of you are fully aware of Tudor’s tremendous contribution to cycling in Wales so I will just add this brief resume of his achievements.
For almost 40 years he has served on our club committee. taking on many positions including that of Chairman, Secretary, Racing Secretary and more recently as Treasurer.
He is a long serving South Wales C.T.T.C. committee member and Treasurer of the West Wales Cycling League. In past years he also served on the Committee of the Welsh Cycling Union.
He has officiated at numerous Welsh Road Races, both as Commissaire and Judge and has also acted as Timekeeper in more Time Trial events than most of our members have ridden
Tudor’s record of promoting events is second to none, from Club and West Wales Open Time Trials and Road Races to major International Premier Calendar stage races. All of which were carried out with meticulous attention to detail and always with great enthusiasm.
His own racing career brought many proud moments including the Welsh 100 mile and 12 hour Time Trial Championship titles and in Road Racing, his selection to represent Wales in The Tour of Ireland.
Many riders would have sat back and been content with these successes, but not Tudor. When health problems shortened his riding career, he retaliated by putting all his energies into the promotion of the sport he loves - proof of this dedication is witnessed by all of us most weeks of the season in one event or another.
So well done Tudor. I am sure all our members will join me in congratulating you on receiving this so -well deserved award in recognition of your tremendous commitment to cycling.
No one deserved it more than you.
Duo Normand

Rudy Project national TT series 2006
Round 2 of the Rudy Project national time trial series took place in Llandeilo on Saturday with Bynea riders showing their faces amongst the elite of British time trialing. Originally the senior riders were to complete a longer course of 27miles, but road works near Carmarthen had all entrants on the same 18 mile circuit.
From the start riders were met by a block head wind all the way to the left turn at Nantgaredig. But a flat stretch followed by a steep climb turned us back home heading for Llandeilo with a big tail wind. Club member Peter Higgins and son Anthony were traveling along this road by car and got `stuck` behind eventual senior winner and fastest overall time Gethin Butler, who was reported to have been traveling in excess of 40mph all the way back to the finish. His 37:57 was good enough to put Glendene cc rider Ben Hallam back into 2nd place with multi national Champion Richard Prebble 3rd.
Again taking more prize money and a pair of Rudy Project socks (he’ll never take them off!) was our own Hefin Price, taking 2nd in the Junior category.
Other Bynea results:
Seniors men – 11th John Holt: 43:05, 14th Mark Hiddlestone: 44:02.
Veterans – 10th Gerry Oram: 42:16, 19th Phil Jones: 48:43, 22nd Tom Samuel: 56:20.
President's race report 2006
As the prevailing rain and wind eased on last Thursday evening some 90 riders plus signed on the line for the President's road race. Conditions were ideal but with a slight wind coming up the valley. Some Bynea members, namely Dave Seaward, Sarah Rees, Wilf Swalbe, Hefin Price and Craig Jones, heeded the statement by John Holt in last week's Hub newsletter about more people Road Racing. The President's race is a handicapped event and began in three stages with time delays between each stage, veterans and women off first on the first stage, followed by seniors second and then the elite riders off last. The 40-mile course with 3 loops around Resolven created a relatively flat course, with one slight hill, which would play a vital role in the break away towards the finish. The average speed of 30 mph by the senior's peleton, which was a tough pace to keep up, had the better of Hefin who had to retire early. By the second lap Sarah was spotted trying to hang on to the back end of the main bunch, but eventually drifted off the back after another acceleration by the peleton. Mean while our Bynea riders were trying to conserve energy mixed in with other riders in the peleton, ready for the final lap. On the final lap of the course the main peleton made up of the senior riders had engulfed the veteran and women riders, with the elite riders catching up fast. Our 3 Bynea riders Dave, Wilf and Craig were jostling for position and had a hard time as every rider was trying to get to the front of the peleton. Some of the riders had a few tense moments at this point, as the sound of pedals hitting wheel spokes was heard, followed by alarmed shouting. All of a sudden the main bunch where accelerating again, on a mission to catch the earlier break away. One spectator was quoted to say after the race "it was like the roar of a stampede before the peleton could be seen" as the peleton headed for the climb before the finish. On the hill one rider was struggling badly and nearly took all of the peleton out as everyone rode around him, which of course slowed all the riders who had to take evasive action, leaving them no chance in getting good placing's. Our three senior riders tried hard to get a top placing after being slowed down, but had to be content with finishing in the front half of the bunch. Well done to Sarah as she was seen still hard at it, and finished the race long after the peleton crossed the line. As our riders recover from this event, June will be the start of the Pembrey Criterium's, which our Bynea riders will be competing in.
Arthur Tholby Memorial Road Race (Anglesey)2006
By John Holt
I traveled up to North Wales at the weekend; the idea was to get a good work out, in a hard road race - away from the South Wales riders before next weekend’s 2-day stage race.
And this 63 mile hilly race for 2nd and 3rd category riders lived up to all expectations!
With Teams of riders and plenty of 2nd cats, this proved to be a tougher challenge than the races I have ridden so far this year. I was warned before the start to watch out for the Deeside Olympic and MK cycles riders (fresh from the tour of the north), as soon as any get away the rest of the race is shut down by team mates left in the bunch.
As soon as the neutralized flag went down we were approaching speeds of 45 mph as we descended Parry’s Mountain and headed for 4 laps of the main circuit. These guys were nutters as attack followed attack! Until the right combination of a Deeside rider and an MK rider got away. As predicted the bunch eased, so over the top I go and 60 seconds of hard work gets me across to the two leaders.
We worked well together as two more riders joined the break to make it 5 up front.
Unfortunately one more MK rider (last year’s winner) who narrowly pips me for the 1st £10 prime. No one seems to contest the 2nd prime and I have time to ease up before the line. The Deeside rider starts to miss turns, waiting for a club mate (Norman Hughes) who is reported to be coming across from the bunch. He uses this excuse for far to long as our lead goes up to 1min 20 and his team mate slips back to the bunch.
He starts to work again as I start to miss turns! Shoving food down as quickly as possible as I feel the hunger knock coming on!!
One rider had already attacked over the last prime and soloed on to a well deserved win.
Meanwhile I’m starting to see stars as we turn off the main circuit and the 4 mile run in to Parys Mountain. Instead of looking for 2nd place, by now I’m just looking to survive as I slip of the back of the break and get swallowed up by a chasing group. With all the carbo loading in the previous 2 days and race day diet, you’ll still run out of glucose if you’re not used to 2hrs 45 mins at this effort.
Of course the alternative would have been to hang around in the bunch, slip away in that chasing group and race for 5th place. But as they say ….. He who dares Rodney!?!!
Still, 10th place at the finish was worth 5 points in this regional A race. With more endurance and more races at this level I should be able to hang on for the higher placings.
CARMARTHEN TRACK YOUTH SESSIONS
Now suported by the Welsh Cycling Community Development Programme. From 6 - 7pm all are welcome and the emphasis is on basic skills and fun races to develop the under 12's, although all the older riders join in and really enjoy this 1st hour!
From 7 - 8pm the emphasis is on developing the older riders in a more continuous session where they are "learning to train "and race whilst still having fun.
Newport Velodrome Saturday morning youth club 2006
Bynea now have over 20 riders under 16 attending Monday evening track sessions on Carmarthen track, and 10 of these youngsters traveled up to Newport on Saturday morning.
Most of the youngsters were gaining their 1st taste of riding a fixed wheel track bike.
We arrived at 8:50am in time to hire bikes (£2), adjust saddle heights and join in the beginners session.
All the riders coped extremely well and enjoyed the experience. The morning session is taken by Neil Smith, Newport Velo’s head coach. After the main session he suggested we continue in the track center with some Go-Ride skills. So with lots of help from all the parents we had them zig zaging the cones, `riding the line`, performing bottle pick ups off a crate, riding in pairs, exchanging the lead every lap, and rounded it off with a limbo bar challenge. With our youngest being 7 and 8 years old the taller 11 year olds didn’t stand a chance!
At this point a couple of the older youth riders were taking part with the experienced riders session.
At 1pm it was time for the 2nd days action in the Welsh track champs. Adam Holt was entered in the under 12 omnium. Where he took a fine Bronze medal in his 1st open race on the Velodrome. A few of the Bynea youngsters stayed to watch the racing and hopefully we will see them competing in the same event next year.
Maindy Mini League (06)
After 3 weeks of racing we have had 4 different members taking part in this 6 week series for all under 14 categories, With most riders taking wins in individual events and piling on the overall points they are certainly giving the Maindy flyers something to think about ahead of the inter club challenge! See the Welsh Cycling website for results.
Go-Ride inter club challenge(October 06)
This 3 race series for all under 16 categories starts with the 1st event on Carmarthen track this Sunday.
With a very sociable 1pm start it is intended for some of the older Maindy flyers to be dropped off at Hendy on the way and ride up to Carmarthen. I intend to meet them at Hendy square at 10:30 am, so if anyone wishes to ride up with us or meet us on the way, get in touch with me before Saturday evening.
Race day – with a 1 pm start anyone who is down to ride should get to the track nice and early. Leave yourself plenty of time to sign on, pin on race numbers and have a warm up.
The race format will probably be a straight bunched race (scratch race) a time trial and a fun skills competition. All riders will compete in age groups.
We have a group of 17 riders who have committed to at least 2 of the series but all are welcome at any of the events. If this is the 1st you have heard of this and you wish to take part just contact me for more details.
Oh and of course with club membership now around the 100 mark it would be really nice to see a few members down there to cheer on the future of your club – see you all there.
